How to Keep Your Furnace in Perfect Condition
The last thing you ever want to happen is for your furnace to break down in the middle of winter during the coldest week of the year (trust us, this is when furnaces break most often).
If you want to avoid your furnace breaking down or dying prematurely, then you better make sure you keep yours in perfect condition.
Steps to Keep Your Furnace in Perfect Condition
1) Have the Furnace Serviced
First things first, you want to have your furnace serviced by a professional HVAC technician. This professional will be able to inspect, service, clean, make necessary repairs, or even replace your furnace without you ever having to lift a finger.
A service and tune-up will allow your technician to see if the unit is operating efficiently, if any parts are malfunctioning, or if it’s on its last legs. If you have your furnace serviced annually, then this service will just be another preventative maintenance that will give you and your family peace of mind heading into winter.
2) Change the Furnace Filters
Once per month, or at least every other month, the filter within the furnace is going to need to be changed. This filter should be changed regardless as you fire up the furnace for the first time.
The furnace filter is going to remove dust, debris, and other particles from the HVAC system so none of it ends up in the air that is dispensed into your home. This will improve the indoor air quality while also making your heating system more efficient.
The filter is located between the return air duct and the blower. Simply open up the filter holding, slip the old filter out, slide the new filter in, and lock the filter holder.
3) Keep an Eye on the Furnace
As the weeks go by and the temperatures get cooler and cooler, you’re going to be relying on your furnace more and more. This means you should be inspecting it every so often to ensure everything is working the way it should be.
Perform a visual inspection every week or so just to ensure there are no strange noises, an abundance of dust, or anything out of the ordinary. And of course, inspect the furnace filter every month to see how dirty it has become.
Keeping an eye on the furnace like this can help you recognize when there’s a problem, allowing you to call your local HVAC technician before it breaks down on you.
