Signs of Poor Indoor Air Quality
Picture this: You’re sitting at home, sniffling and sneezing worse than what you typically do outside. Granted, it could be possible that your seasonal allergies followed you indoors — but the likelihood that they’re even worse in your humble abode than on your front lawn is low.
Knowing this, you may have poor indoor air quality lingering in your home — but how so? Here are some signs to be on the lookout for.
Common Signs of Poor Indoor Air Quality
Indoor Allergies
While we’re on the subject, one common sign of poor “IAQ” is suffering from indoor allergies. From a runny nose to an itchy throat, the list goes on and on — however, these can be caused by a multitude of things, such as:
-
Dust
-
Mold
-
Pet dander
Of course, while some of these are simple to expel from your home, others are not — especially if your humidity levels are unbalanced.
Unbalanced Humidity Levels
Another indication of having poor indoor air quality is having unbalanced humidity levels in your home. Whether you notice the formation of mold or mildew in the most obscure places (i.e., under your kitchen sink) to seeing condensation on the windows, the possibilities are endless.
Many times, this is caused when moisture cannot escape your home — which can happen due to an uneven distribution of air in your home (because of an HVAC system that is in need of repair) or because no fresh air has circulated indoors in quite some time.
Dirty Air Filter
If you have a central air conditioner, you know that you’ll have to replace your filter approximately every 60 days when you’re using it regularly. However, if you find that your filter needs to be replaced earlier than two months, that indicates that you have a problem on your hands.
Many times, this is because there is a higher level of allergens in your home (i.e., wearing shoes indoors, not vacuuming as often, or having a pet that sheds frequently) that are going airborne and not leaving your humble abode.
