Spring Cleaning Checklist
Spring is known for many things, slightly warmer weather, more sunshine, bluer skies, allergies, and our personal favorite, cleaning! We don’t know about you, but we actually look forward to spring cleaning around here. It’s an opportunity to deep clean and organize all of those forgotten places in your home. Below are a few of our essential areas to clean.
Water Heater
Did you know that you’re supposed to clean your water heater regularly? We don’t mean just wiping down the tank and tubes; we mean the interior of the tank. This is referred to as flushing the water heater. We recommend doing this once or twice a year, especially if you’re noticing an increase in sediment.
The need for flushing out your water heater is even greater if you live in an area with higher mineral content in the water (otherwise known as hard water). These minerals end up collecting at the bottom of the water heater tank, which can cause a number of different problems, including:
- A reduction in heating power. As sediment collects, it blocks the heating element, causing the water heater to have to work harder to heat the water to the same temperature.
- Premature rusting. Rusting to a certain degree is inevitable, but sediment can cause rust to form before it should.
- Contaminated water. Eventually, that rust that forms on the interior of the tank makes its way through your home’s pipes and out of your faucets and showerheads.
Flushing out your water heater regularly is essential no matter the type of water heater you have at your home. For any assistance with this task, contact our team!
Indoor Air
The quality of your home’s indoor air has always been important, but with health at the forefront of our minds and the amount of time we’ve spent at home lately, it’s become even more important. What are you doing to keep your air safe and healthy to breathe?
Air Filters
The general rule of thumb for air filters is to replace them at least every 90 days. However, there are a few factors that could require you to replace them more frequently. Some of the big ones are:
- If you have any babies or little kids at home, you should replace your air filters every 30 days. They have weaker immune systems and have not yet built up tolerances to everyday contaminants.
- If you have any pets at home, replace your air filters every 30 days. It’s not just pet dander that you have to be conscious of. Pets also track more dirt, dust, and bacteria into your house that you’re not necessarily aware of.
- Does anyone in your home smoke or vape? If so, you should replace your air filters more frequently. The smoke from these clogs up your air filters a lot faster, making your air filters less effective.
Ceiling Fans
Have you ever cleaned your ceiling fan? We would completely understand if you’ve never done this before, out of sight, out of mind. But now that you know make it a part of your usual cleaning routine. We would recommend dusting them every month or so, sooner if you notice dust collecting. Once you know what to look out for, it’ll be hard to miss.
As your ceiling fan blades rotate through the air, they catch a lot of the dust that circulates up there. They quickly become coated with dust and dirt, and as they continue to spin, they end up recirculating all of that debris.
