Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling My House?

Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling My House?

You come home sweaty after a long day at work. You sit down on the couch and hear the air conditioning system kick on. “Thank goodness,” you say to yourself with high hopes that you’ll be cool in a matter of minutes. But an hour later you still seem to be warm and the house doesn’t feel any cooler. What could possibly have gone wrong?

There are a number of issues that could go wrong with a home air conditioning system that could prevent it from blowing cold air and cooling down a space. See below to find out what the problem could be:

Problems With The Air Filter

This tends to be the most common cause for your lack of cool air. When the system is working properly, air is pulled over the evaporator coils where it’s cooled, and then it circulates into the room.

If the air filter is clogged or dirty, it can prevent adequate airflow which can cause the evaporator coils to become too cold and they could potentially freeze up. When this happens, very little, or no air at all will be circulated into the room which is why your home might still feel warm even after you hear the system running for a while.

The solution? Shut the system down and clean or replace the filter right away. Let the evaporator coils defrost for a few hours and then start the system back up again.

Issues With The Temperature Control

If the filter doesn’t seem to be the problem, there may be a problem with the temperature control or the thermostat. There’s a bulb-like component of your cooling system that measures indoor air temperatures and relays that message to your thermostat.

If the bulb isn’t working properly, it could relay inaccurate signals back to your thermostat or it may not send power to the compressor. In either case, your system may fail to produce cool air and you could be left with a warm house.
