Spring has nearly arrived, which for most people represents a welcome change in weather and longer days, but for those that deal with seasonal allergies, springtime can be a nightmare. Red and itchy eyes, a constantly running nose, scratchy throat, and non-stop sneezing are just a few of the symptoms that characterize seasonal allergies. When allergy season is at its height, it can seem like there’s no safe space from it. Even the inside of your home offers minimal relief. We’re on a mission to change that. By utilizing some of our helpful tips, you’ll be feeling better in no time and hopefully won’t even notice allergy season this time around.
What Causes Allergies?
Spring allergies are generally triggered by an influx of pollen in the air. As trees, grasses, weeds, and flowers all begin to come back to life after the winter, they release pollen into the air in order to fertilize one another. That pollen can be really triggering to the body if you’re allergic. Your immune system sees the pollen as a danger and releases antibodies and histamines, that trigger all common allergy symptoms.
Luckily, when you know you’ll be outside for long periods, you can take an allergy medication that will work against those histamines, reducing the presence of your allergy symptoms. But when you’re just relaxing at home, you shouldn’t have to rely on medication to keep you comfortable.
These are the most important and beneficial tips and changes you can make to reduce the presence of allergens inside your house.
Replace Your Air Filters
Whether you suffer from allergies or not, replacing your air filters regularly is a recommended practice for maintaining clean indoor air. Typically, we recommend replacing them every 90 days, but consider replacing them every 30 to 60 days instead if you have allergies. Your air filters will work hard to filter out allergens, pollutants, and debris from your air. Some of the most common pollutants include:
- Dust
- Pet dander
- Bacteria
- Pollen
- Mold spores
Your air filter will catch these pollutants before they have a chance to circulate throughout your home, leaving you with cleaner, fresher air. If you’re not sure which air filters are best for you and your needs. Contact our team at American Mechanical for help!
Keep Your Home Clean
Unfortunately, your once-a-month cleaning routine is not going to cut it if you really want to reduce the presence of allergens in your home. A clean home allows for fewer allergens and debris to settle into your carpet, and air ducts will keep you breathing easier all spring long.
For an allergy-free home we recommend adding the following to your clean routine:
- Vacuum the carpets
- Mop the hard floors
- Dust the baseboards, air vent covers, ceiling fan blades, window sills, and furniture
Utilize Humidifiers
While too much moisture in the air can lead to the growth of mold, mildew, and dust mites, some humidity is good for your air quality. The best range for humidity in your home is between 70 and 80 percent, and that added moisture will help to soothe your nose and throat.
